We had this debate already. Content is a poor word, user is a poor role name.
If 'amateur media' sounds too perjorative, retranslate to English as 'lovingly created media'.

Chris,
Although I haven't looked at Yahoo in the last year, I really doubt that they've figured anything out other than which buzz words to use.

And I used Yahoo from their beginning. It was Yahoo that took the web to something more than hyper linked gopher pages. But they lost me last year when Yahoo became a billboard with links. I blogged about it here.

My main point was this: "Of course they need to make money. But why would I go to a web directory to find a product when I can just google it and get additional hits from companies that don't happen to pay Yahoo?"

BTW, love your blog.

ok, this comment actuallly has to do with you article on Fortune 500 blogs.

thought you might be interested to know that it looks like someone at the ny times (dan *cough* mitchell *cough, cough*) has taken that idea and turned it into a NY Times column.

From the comments, it looks like Yahoo deals partly in content and partly in discontent.

Chris, I nominated The Long Tail for the 2006 Weblog Awards, in both Best American Weblog and Weblog of the Year categories. Here's a link for other readers in case they want to do the same.

The Long Tail is bunk. Actually, it's always existed but new technologies are just documenting it. User generated content is nothin' but a 21st century version of CB radio chatter.

I really love this blog, Semel is really a gr8 person.. I appreciate his words "Almost everything on Yahoo! is content. About 80 percent of the content people have heard of, but then there's that tail..." This is really an amazing..
