Terry Semel, Longtailer

That's what four years in Silicon Valley will do to you. Yahoo! CEO Terry Semel, the ultimate Hollywood guy (ex-Warner, Disney, CBS), has got Long Tail religion. From this morning's CES presentation, where Yahoo! introduced its Yahoo! Go set of video and mobile services, via Engadget:

Semel:  "Almost everything on Yahoo! is content.  About 80 percent of the content people have heard of, but then there's that tail..."

"People can elect to have us ad an advertisement to [their content] and effectively go into business as a publisher.  It creates a whole new world.  We can call it tail content, I prefer to call it user-generated content."

We had this debate already. Content is a poor word, user is a poor role name.
If 'amateur media' sounds too perjorative, retranslate to English as 'lovingly created media'.

Although I haven't looked at Yahoo in the last year, I really doubt that they've figured anything out other than which buzz words to use.

And I used Yahoo from their beginning. It was Yahoo that took the web to something more than hyper linked gopher pages. But they lost me last year when Yahoo became a billboard with links. I blogged about it here.

My main point was this: "Of course they need to make money. But why would I go to a web directory to find a product when I can just google it and get additional hits from companies that don't happen to pay Yahoo?"
